Minister of Mines Dedicates Oceanographic Research Vessel ‘RV Samudra Ratnakar’ to the Nation

Union Minister for Mines, Shri Dinsha Patel dedicated a deep sea exploration ship ‘RV Samudra Ratnakar’ to the nation at Kandla Port on Saturday.

Congratulating GSI the Minister said that RV Samudra Ratnakar, the research vessel is a state-of-the-art acquisition of GSI, designed to meet the fast-growing challenges of the modern geo-scientific oceanographic researches.

The ship is equipped with high-end technologically advanced instruments needed for geological, geophysical and geochemical explorations in the offshore areas. The vessel is a unique multitasking and multi-disciplinary ship with modern on-board laboratories, designed to carry out sea-bed mapping, mineral exploration etc. in the deep waters and also research activities.

The Ship has been built by M/s. Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Ulsan, South Korea, one of the largest ship building yards in the world. Contract to build the ship was signed between GSI and HHI on 4th March 2011 and the ship has been built in a record time. After initial Sea Trials and Sea Acceptance Test of various on-board equipments and its navigational system during May-June 2013, the vessel has been delivered at Ulsan, South Korea on 17th September 2013 to Director General, GSI. The ship arrived at Kandla Port on 8th October 2013 and will commence marine geoscientific surveys and exploration activities in January, 2014 after conducting sea trials of certain survey equipment in deep sea upto 4500m and on-board training to the geoscientists of GSI by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)...
