Important English Vocabulary for competitive exams

1.    Elapse  (बीतनासमय बीत जाना)
Syn. : Lapse, Slip away, Pass, Glide
Ant. – Stand ,  Freeze, Stop
Meaning : When time elapses, it passes.
Example : Forty – eight hours have elapsed since his arrest.



2.    Elucidate (स्पष्ट करनासमझाना)
Syn. – Illuminate, Interpret, Make clear, Clarify
Ant. – Contented, Satisfied, Helpful, Pleased
Meaning : If you elucidate something, you make it clear and easy to understand.
Example : Haig went on to elucidate his personal principle of war.

3.    Erect (खड़ा करनासीधा करना)
Syn. – Raise, Found, Set up right, Build
Ant. – Fall Down, Sink
Meaning: If people erect something such as a building, bridge, or barrier, they build it or create it.
Example: Opposition demonstrators have erected barricades in roads leading to the parliament building.

4.    Eventual (अंतिममुमकिन)
Syn. – Conditional, Ultimate
Ant. – Prior, Preliminary, Intermediate
Meaning :  You use eventual to indicate that something happens or is the case at the end of a process or period of time.
Example: The eventual aim is reunification.

5.    Excursion  (भ्रमणपर्यटन)
Syn. – Journey, Trip
Ant. – Peace, Quiet
Meaning: You can refer to a short journey as an excursion, especially if it is made for pleasure or enjoyment.
Example: In Bermuda, Sam’s father took him on an excursion to a coral barrier.

6.    Expostulate  (मनानासमझाना)
Syn. – If you expostulate, you express strong disagreement with someone.
Ant. Abet, Pretext , Fallacy
Meaning: If you expostulate, you express strong disagreement with someone.
Example: For heaven’s sake !’ Dot expostulated. They’re cheap and they ‘re useful.

7.    Feud  (झगड़ा)
Syn. - Dispute ,
Ant. – Friendliness, Sympathy
Meaning: A feud is a quarrel in which two people or groups remain angry with each other for a long time, Although they are not always fighting or arguing.
Example : a long and bitter feud between the state government and the villagers.

8.    Fathomless
Syn. – Unfathomable, Abysmal
Ant. – Shallow, Fathomable
Meaning: Something that is fathomless cannot be measured or understood because it gives the impression of being very deep, mysterious, or complicated.
Example : the fathomless space of the universe.

9.    Global  (भू-मंडलीयसार्वत्रिक)
Syn. – Worldwide, International
Ant. – Local, National,
Meaning : You can use global to describe something that happens in all parts of the world or affects all parts of the world.

10.  Gambol  (कूद-फांद)
Syn.- Frisk, Prank
Ant. – Fire, work

Meaning : If animals or people gambol, they run or jump about in a playful way.
